These audios were created during Duolingo Events and transcribed with the attendees.
No politics
S1 – What do you think about current topic No Politic?
S2 – I think the world would be a better place if we had a better alternative rather than politic to gave the world the order that it needs. So I would love the idea that the world could be with no politics.
S1 – As for me I think here in Duolingo events we are bit out of politics, out of propaganda and we can meet people around the world, and we are see each other, and we are still people, and no matter what propaganda influence.
Comments
Need to say ‘politics’
‘give’ rather than ‘gave’
‘we see each other’ instead of ‘we are see each other’
‘no matter what propaganda influences or ‘no matter the influence of propaganda’ instead of ‘and no matter what propaganda influence’
S1: Oh, I don’t like politics because this topic source only conflicts and empty discussions i guess.
S2: As the duck swims in the lake we, the humans, swim in politics.
S3: Politics is one of the most contraversial subject ever. People can have strong ideas about it, so it can be very hard to have a friendly discussion about it. Although i have to admit it is not always easy or even possible to draw a certain line between what is political and what is not.
Comments
‘this topic source only conflicts’ could be ‘this topic can cause conflicts’ or ‘this topic is only the source of conflicts and …’
S2 is using a metaphor
S3 a ‘clear line’ is a common collocation
Outer space
S1 – Tell me, what do you know about outer space?
S2 – Outer space has particles like hydrogen and helium
S2 – Georgia, what do you know about human gases in outer space?
S1 – As far as I know we can’t verb in outer space but on other hand we usually farts more often but I have no idea why
Comments
‘particles’ is not the right word for Hydrogen and Helium – they are atoms
‘gases’ sounds a bit like ‘guesses’ here
burps and farts are the ways humans produce gas
S1 – Would you like to travel to outer space?
S2 – Probably no, because I saw a video about space journey or astronauts. They cannot brush their teeth properly so because of that I would not like to go
S3 – I would like to stay on Earth and I am afraid of outer space and it might be really inconvenient for me.
– Do you believe that there is another creatures in outer space?
– Yes I believe it’s very possible for extra-terrestrial life to be out there. Cuz, after all, human can not be the center of the universe.
Comments
Instead of ‘another creatures’ we could say ‘other creatures’ or ‘some other creatures’
‘extra-terrestrial’ is the right word but it is very hard to say
‘humans’ is better than ‘human’
– Do you think that life was created on Mars? – I don’t know. It’s possible. It’s just good version based on the recent research that I’ve read there was life on the Mars. I think that soon it’s gonna be life there for sure after Elon Mask sent there some spaceshift and colonized it. – If we are not a delusion I believe that life there designed specifically for Earth.
Comments
We don’t use ‘the’ with Mars.
S1: Would you want to go into outer space if you had the option?
S2: Yes of course I don’t believe it will be possible in future but I believe I want to believe.
S1: And Vassilis did you ever imagine yourself on board of a space ship or would you rather stay down on earth?
S3: I’m willing to go to outer space if only Elon Musk comes with me.
Comment
‘I’m willing to go to outer space’ maybe it should be ‘I’m willing to go into outer space’
Stereotypes about my country
S1: So Stella, when I went to Italy people tried flirt with my girlfriend. Is it true that Italian guys are womanizer?
S2: Oh womanizer in Italy …well it’s mostly true. In my experience at least. When I’ve been to Italy i’ve been getting complimentes right left and center.
Interesting language
‘people tried to flirt’ is OK, ‘people kept trying to flirt’ would say it happened regularly.
‘womanizer’ has a slightly different meaning – ‘flirtatious’ may be more accurate
‘i’ve been getting’ implies the attention is still happening now, if it is in the past ‘I kept getting’ or ‘I got’ would be more accurate.
S1: Is there any stereotype about Czech Republic that you heard about or that you were told before you came here?
S2: Yes, before i came here i’ve been told that czech people are cold
S1: Oh cold!? In what way? That we don’t smile?
S2: Yes they are cold and when friends meet they don’t greet each other with kisses and hugs.
Interesting language
There is a difference between
Yes, before i went there i’ve been told that czech people are cold
and
Yes, before i went there i’d been told that czech people are cold
– what is the definition of stereotype?
– Stereotype is something that people think that it’s real and sometimes it is not.
– This is a picture or an idea which we have in our heads about things and it’s not always true.
– I think that stereotypes are just simplified thinking used by people who don’t want to think by themselves.
And there are a lot of stereotypes about Russia. People think that there are a lot of beers walks in the streets in Russia and everyone drinking vodka.
Interesting language
‘bears walking’ is better than ‘beers walks’
Interesting language
Penguins
– What do you know about penguins?
– Not much, I think penguins are some black and white birds which can’t fly. And they are walking very funny.
– Oh I remember. My son was doing a project on these, it seems that they can not fly because their wings are short and their bones are solid. So they could swim under water.
Interesting language
They are walking very funny
could be
They walk in a funny way
Or
Their way of walking is very funny.
John: Have you ever seen a penguin in real life?
Mobina: No, I haven’t seen any penguin in my life. John, what about you. Have you ever seen a penguin?
John: I guess your first penguin in future. In near future. Unfortunately, I didn’t, but I want to believe I do it as fast as possible.
Burak: Did you know that penguins are birds?
John: Really?
Mobina: Yeah, like chickens and ducks.
John: If penguins like chickens, would you eat penguins?
Burak: No, they’re so cute! We can’t eat them.
Mobina: I don’t think I’m ever gonna eat them because they are so cute.
John: And this is not so easy to cut* them. Because you know, they live in the water. Like a fish.
Interesting language
Instead of “No, I haven’t seen any penguin in my life.” it’d be OK to say “I have never seen penguins.”.
John could have said “I hope to see my first penguin in the near future.” It would have been easier to understand but it would not have contained the full joke.
If penguins were like chickens, would you eat penguins?
My languages
– Do you have any experience with learning languages through watching movies or listening to music?
– Yes, I always listen to English music and watch English movies and it really help me to improve my listening and somehow speaking skills. What about you? Do you like to watch movies or listening to songs?
– Yes I am mostly watching movies with original these days but usually I still need subtitles to properly understand especially if there is any heavy slang. But music, yes most of the time it’s great when I can read lyrics along side it as well.
– And how many languages can you speak Well, I speak English, German and bits and pieces of Russian. And I recently started French. But its not speaking that’s like listening mostly. And what about you?
– I speak Persian and English and I’m a beginner at French. And recently I started to learn Germany
Interesting language
We discussed “I am mostly watching movies with original these days” and agreed that “I mostly watch movies in the original language” sounds a bit better.
I started to learn German.
Burak: How many languages you can speak?
John: Without help of Google, I can speak four languages: Russian, Ukrainian, English (a bit) and Portugish. And what about you?
Burak: I can speak Turkish, English, a little Spanish, and a little Czech.
Interesting language
The first question could be
How many languages can you speak?
or
How many languages do you speak?
“Portugish” is the way the Portugese say it.
